We had been looking for chairs for two days to go with the used computer desk we just bought. Sharing the ladder wasn’t working out too well. Then we saw a great price on office chairs at the Big C department store. They only had 2 left, the one on display and one in a box. Gary decided to get them, with just a germ of an idea on how to get them home on our motor scooter. I did not want to sit on the box!
We crammed my back pack, the yogurt, 2 short loaves of bread, and 6 apples in the back carrier. Then we bungee corded and string tied the put-together chair upside down on top of the carrier. I got behind Gary and put the box on my lap between us. The bungee cord was down to 3-4 strands of rubber at the stress point, so I reached my left arm back to help hold the chair on. I felt like I was going to tip over to the right most of the trip home.
We had to go about 5 km over speed bumps and then fast moving roads. Finally, we were off the main street for the last 4 blocks. Gary said if the chair fell off then we could come back and get it, so I let go. The bungee cord snapped in 1.5 blocks. The chair hung way down, but didn't hit the ground. We untied it and I started walking toward home with the box. Gary was going to try to tie the chair on the seat when Piak, a young man that’s been helping Gary at our house, came up and offered to carry the chair. He must have seen the chair slide down as we went by his house. So we paraded home, the box, the motor scooter, and the chair.
Our friend Hok and her niece greeted us at our house. I got home just in time to give the niece the English lesson I had promised to give her at 6:30 pm.
And the bread was hardly smashed.
